Former Auburn tight end joining Philadelphia Eagles

Former Auburn tight end C.J. Uzomah is signing with the Philadelphia Eagles after passing a physical on Thursday.

Uzomah will join the Eagles on a one-year contract, NBC Sports Philadelphia and NFL Network reported.

The New York Jets released Uzomah on March 13 with a failed-physical designation and a season left on a three-year, $24 million contract.

Uzomah finished the 2023 season on injured reserve after he sustained a medial collateral ligament injury during a 13-8 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Dec. 3. He missed the final five games of the season.

Uzomah had eight receptions for 58 yards and one touchdown in 12 games, with eight starts, in 2023, when he was on the field for 239 offensive snaps and 148 special-teams plays.

Uzomah will become the sixth tight end on Philadelphia’s roster.

Starter Dallas Goedert had 59 receptions for 592 yards and three touchdowns in 14 games last season. Grant Calcaterra has nine receptions for 120 yards in two seasons with the Eagles. The other tight ends — E.J. Jenkins, Albert Okwuegbunam and Noah Togiai – did not have an NFL reception in 2023.

Uzomah entered the NFL from Auburn as a fifth-round draft choice of the Cincinnati Bengals in 2015.

In his first six seasons with the Bengals, Uzomah had 114 receptions for 1,098 yards and eight touchdowns.

After missing all but two games of the 2020 season because a torn Achilles tendon, Uzomah had 49 receptions for 493 yards and five touchdowns as Cincinnati won the AFC championship and lost to the Los Angeles Rams 23-20 in Super Bowl LVI during the 2021 campaign.

After the 2021 season, the Jets signed Uzomah in free agency. In his first season with New York, Uzomah had 21 receptions for 232 yards and two touchdowns.
