Former Auburn standout signs unusual NFL contract

Derick Hall signed his first NFL contract on Tuesday, and according to NFL Network, the former Auburn standout’s deal has some groundbreaking features for a second-round selection.

All draft picks sign four-year contracts. The values of those contracts are based on the NFL’s salary cap of $224.8 million for the 2023 season and this year’s rookie compensation pool in a formula spelled out in the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the league and its players association.

Hall’s contract had a $9.116 million value that includes a signing bonus of $3.63 million.

Two features make Hall’s contract unusual for a second-rounder.

The guaranteed money stretches into the final season, assuring that Hall will be paid at least $7.22 million. The contract guarantees the signing bonus, base salaries for the 2023, 2024 and 2025 seasons and $100,000 of 2026′s $1.993 million salary.

The contract also calls for Hall to receive 85 percent of his signing bonus before he reports for training camp next month, an unusually high rate for his position in the draft.

Hall was an All-SEC defensive end in 2022 after receiving second-team recognition at that spot in 2021. In his senior season at Auburn, Hall recorded 60 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 11.5 tackles for loss and one interception.

The Seahawks plan to play Hall at outside linebacker.

Also signing his first NFL contract on Tuesday was former UAB running back DeWayne McBride.

A seventh-round selection of the Minnesota Vikings on April 29, McBride signed a four-year, $3.95 million contract that included a $110,404 signing bonus, which is the guaranteed portion of the deal.

McBride ran for 1,713 yards and 19 touchdowns on 233 carries for UAB last season. He averaged 15 more rushing yards per game than any other NCAA FBS player in the 2022 season.
