Former Auburn quarterback looking to transfer for 4th straight year
Former Auburn quarterback TJ Finley is looking to transfer again, he announced on Saturday.
Finley, who is now at Western Kentucky, said he entering the NCAA transfer portal and is seeking a medical redshirt for the 2024 season. He started the Hilltoppers’ season-opener vs. Alabama — passing for 92 yards and two interceptions — and also the following week against Eastern Kentucky before suffering a season-ending ankle injury in Week 3 vs. Middle Tennessee.
The 6-foot-7, 238-pound Finley originally signed with LSU out of Ponchatoula, La., and played in five games for the Tigers as a true freshman before transferring to Auburn. In two seasons on The Plains, he passed for 1,258 yards and seven touchdowns with five interceptions in 13 games before leaving again at the end of 2022.
Finley landed at Texas State, where he had his best season in 2023. He passed for 3,439 yards and 24 touchdowns with eight interceptions as the Bobcats finished 8-5 and won the First Responder Bowl.
However, Texas State signed Arizona transfer Jayden de Laura via the transfer portal, causing Finley to hit the road again (de Laura never played a snap for the Bobcats after it was revealed he had settled a sexual assault lawsuit; Texas State eventually signed James Madison transfer Jordan McCloud). Finley transferred to Western Kentucky, where he beat out Caden Veltcamp during the preseason.
Veltcamp took over following Finley’s injury this season and passed for 2,806 yards and 23 touchdowns with 10 interceptions. The Hilltoppers (8-5) lost to Jacksonville State 52-12 in the Conference USA championship game on Friday night, and will face James Madison in the Boca Raton Bowl on Dec. 18.
