Former Auburn offensive lineman transferring to Troy

Former Auburn offensive lineman Colby Smith isn’t venturing too far down the road for his next college opportunity.

Smith, who entered the transfer portal during the post-spring window, announced Tuesday night that he committed to Troy. Smith will have three years of eligibility remaining with the Trojans, who are coming off a Sun Belt title and 12-2 overall record during their first season under head coach Jon Sumrall.

The 6-foot-8, 340-pound Smith was a three-star offensive tackle prospect who signed with Auburn as part of its 2021 recruiting class. The Reidsville, N.C., native did not see the field during his first year with the Tigers and redshirted that season. He appeared in only one game last fall, making his debut during Auburn’s home finale against Western Kentucky in the penultimate week of the regular season.

After spending his first two seasons on the Plains working at tackle, Smith shifted to the interior of the line this spring and worked at guard as Auburn’s offensive line underwent an overhaul this offseason. During the final week of spring practices, Smith was seen working with the third-team offensive line at left guard, and he exited spring down the depth chart of the Tigers’ retooled offensive line group.

Smith was one of 11 players to transfer from Auburn since the start of spring practices, and he was the 15th member of the Tigers’ 2021 recruiting class — which had 18 high school and junior college signees — to depart the program in the last two years.
