Former Auburn offensive coordinator gets contract extension at SMU

SMU has locked up head football coach Rhett Lashlee with a contract extension, the school announced Friday.

The 42-year-old Lashlee, Auburn’s offensive coordinator from 2013-16, is 27-10 in three seasons with the Mustangs. SMU — in its first season as a member of the ACC — is 9-1 and ranked No. 13 nationally headed into Saturday’s game at Virginia.

“We look forward to building upon our success and making our mark on college football’s national stage,” Lashlee said. “I want to thank President (R. Gerald Turner and (athletics director) Rick Hart, as well as Bill Armstong and David Miller and all the Trustees and SMU leadership for their belief in and commitment to me and my family. We are thrilled to be here for the long haul. Pony Up!”

SMU is a private school, so Lashlee’s contract terms were not disclosed. His original deal was believed to be paying him the neighborhood of $2.3 million per year, while the new contract is expected to run through the 2030 season, according to CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello.

Lashlee played quarterback for Gus Malzahn at Shiloh Christian High School in Arkansas, then joined him as a graduate assistant at Arkansas in 2006. He was also a GA with Malzahn at Auburn in 2009-10 before spending a year each as offensive coordinator at Samford and Arkansas State.

When Malzahn returned to Auburn as head coach in 2013, he made the then-30-year-old Lashlee his offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Lashlee spent four seasons with the Tigers — helping them to an SEC title and BCS national championship game appearance in his first year — before serving as OC at Connecticut (2017), SMU (2018-19) and Miami (2020-21).

Hired as head coach at SMU after Sonny Dykes left for TCU in 2022, Lashlee led the Mustangs to records of 7-6 and 11-3 (winning their first conference title in 29 years) before the school joined the ACC. SMU has lost only to BYU this season, and has a shot at a berth in the College Football Playoff should it win its final two regular-season games (at Virginia and at home vs. California) and then the ACC championship game.

“Rhett was the clear choice when we conducted our head-coaching search in 2021, and everything he and his staff have accomplished only validates our decision,” Hart said. “He has operated in alignment with our values and represents SMU with class and integrity.“

As we go through a time of significant change in college athletics and the college athletics model, Rhett has been an invaluable partner and leader. We’re excited that Rhett, Lauren and his family will continue this journey with us and are looking forward to shaping champions and competing for championships for years to come.”
