Former Auburn cornerback on the move in NFL free agency for $60 million
For the second offseason in a row, cornerback Carlton Davis is changing NFL teams. This time, the choice was his.
The former Auburn cornerback and the New England Patriots have reached an agreement on a three-year contract that Davis will be able to sign after 3 p.m. CDT Wednesday, when his current contract expires, making him an unrestricted free agent.
Players with expiring contracts could begin negotiating with other teams at 11 a.m. Monday.
NFL Network reported Davis’ deal with New England as worth $60 million, with $34.5 million in guaranteed money. The Athletic reported Davis’ contract would be worth $18 million a season instead of $20 million, but included incentives that could raise its total value to $60 million.
At $20 million, Davis’ deal would have the seventh-highest annual value of current cornerback contracts. At $18 million, it would rank 13th.
Last offseason, with Davis entering the final season of a three-year, $44.5 million contract, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded him to the Detroit Lions. Davis had been a starter in the Tampa Bay secondary since coming aboard from Auburn in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
For Detroit, Davis had two interceptions, 11 passes defended, 56 tackles and two fumble recoveries when a broken jaw in the 13th game sent him to the sidelines for the remainder of the season. Quarterbacks throwing to receivers covered by Davis had a 77.0 passing-efficiency rating (the best of his career) and two touchdowns on 76 passes in 2024.
In 89 NFL regular-season games, Davis has 11 interceptions, 84 passes defended, 380 tackles, four forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries.
Davis also has played in nine postseason games, including the Buccaneers’ 31-9 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV on Feb. 7, 2021.
