John Petty Jr., a former University of Alabama basketball star, is facing charges of eluding police and DUI – among others – after he was arrested Saturday night and booked into the Madison County Jail, according to a booking log.

Petty, who also played for the Birmingham Squadron of the NBA G League, is also charged with driving with a suspended license and reckless driving, according to booking records. He was booked at 9:15 p.m. Saturday and released early Sunday morning. Bond was set at $7,300.

The circumstances surrounding the arrest were not immediately known late Sunday night.

In 131 games over four seasons with Alabama from 2017 to 2021, Petty averaged 11.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists. He received All-SEC second-team recognition in the 2019-20 season and All-SEC first-team recognition in the 2020-21 campaign.

A four-time first-team All-State selection, Petty played on AHSAA Class 5A championship teams at the Huntsville high schools J.O. Johnson in 2015 and 2016 and Mae Jemison in 2017 and won the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Mr. Basketball honor in 2016 and 2017.

After going undrafted in the 2021 NBA draft, Petty signed with the New Orleans Pelicans in the 2021 draft. Shortly after, he signed with the Birmingham Squadron as an affiliate player. In his two seasons with Birmingham, Petty averaged 7.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 89 games before being traded to the Greensboro Swarm.
