Former Alabama standout nets her first WNBA basket

Former Alabama forward Aaliyah Nye scored the first points of her WNBA career on Tuesday night during the Las Vegas Aces’ 87-62 victory over the Connecticut Sun.

At Mohegan Sun Arena in Montville, Connecticut, Nye sank a 3-point shot from the corner with 9:49 remaining for her first WNBA basket.

The Aces selected Nye with the 13th choice in the WNBA Draft on April 14. Nye was the first player picked by Las Vegas, which did not have a first-round selection.

A second-team All-SEC selection for the 2024-25 season, Nye averaged 15.2 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.1 steals in 33 games as Alabama advanced to the second round of the NCAA women’s tournament.

For the second season in a row, Nye broke the Alabama single-season record for 3-point baskets. After sinking 108 in the 2023-24 season, she made 109 during the 2024-25 campaign as she became the Crimson Tide’s career leader in buckets beyond the arc.

Nye played three seasons at Alabama after playing two at Illinois. With the Crimson Tide, she averaged 13.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.4 steals in 97 games.

Nye made her WNBA debut on Saturday without scoring in the Aces’ 92-78 loss to the New York Liberty.

The Aces play the Washington Mystics at 9 p.m. CDT Friday at Michelob Ultra Arena in Paradise, Nevada. ION will televise the game.
