Former Alabama safety back in the Giants’ secondary

The New York Giants will have starting safety Xavier McKinney available again as they attempt to secure a postseason berth on Sunday.

McKinney has missed the past seven games after sustaining broken fingers in an ATV accident during the Giants’ bye week. The former Alabama standout returned to practice this week, and New York restored him to the active roster from injured reserve on Saturday.

McKinney was among five players from Alabama high schools and colleges who will be eligible to play on Sunday after entering the weekend ineligible for NFL action:

· The Los Angeles Rams restored offensive lineman Chandler Brewer (Florence) to the active roster from injured reserve. After making his first two NFL starts, Brewer had missed the past six games because of a knee injury. He returned to practice on Dec. 22. The Rams play the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

· The Cleveland Browns signed linebacker Tae Davis (Oxford) to their active roster. Davis had been a member of the Browns’ practice squad since Nov. 29 and had played on special teams in each of the previous three games as a practice-squad elevation. NFL rules allow a team to elevate the same player no more than three times for game-day duty. For Cleveland to use Davis in Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders, he had to be a member of the 53-player active roster.

· The New England Patriots signed cornerback Tae Hayes (Decatur) to their active roster. Hayes had been a member of the Patriots’ practice squad since Tuesday. The former Birmingham Stallions standout had 38 defensive snaps and 16 special-teams plays in five games for the Carolina Panthers earlier this season, his third in the NFL. New England plays the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

· The Arizona Cardinals elevated safety Josh Thomas (Montgomery Academy) from their practice squad, making him eligible to play against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. If Thomas plays, it will be his first NFL regular-season appearance since Nov. 15, 2020. He played in two games that season for the Buffalo Bills. Thomas spent most of the previous two seasons on the Bills’ practice squad. He joined the Cardinals’ practice squad after being released by Buffalo at the end of the preseason on Aug. 29.
