Former Alabama running back records NFL’s fastest speed of the week
Cleveland Browns running back Jerome Ford registered the fastest speed of any ball-carrier in the NFL during the 16 Week 15 games, according to the league’s Next Gen Stats.
Ford reached a top speed of 21.7 mph on a 62-yard touchdown run in the Browns’ 21-7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. It’s the 12th-fastest speed recorded by a ball-carrier in the NFL this season.
Ford became the second straight former Alabama player to top the NFL’s speed chart. Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams was the league’s fastest ball-carrier for the Week 14 games at 20.45 mph.
In 15 weeks, former Alabama players have been the league’s fastest ball-carrier four times.
Ford also was the fastest ball-carrier for Week 2 of the season, when he hit 21.29 mph on a 32-yard run during an 18-13 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sept. 15.
Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs’ 22.03 mph led in Week 8. That ranks as the third-fastest speed for a ball-carrier in the NFL this season.
Ford also recorded the seventh-fastest speed of Week 15 at 20.17 mph on a 45-yard kickoff return.
Ford played at Alabama in the 2018 and 2019 seasons. He ran for 151 yards and three touchdowns on 31 carries and caught two passes for 11 yards while playing behind future NFL running backs Damien Harris, Josh Jacobs, Najee Harris and Brian Robinson Jr. Ford transferred to Cincinnati, where he played two seasons before joining the Browns in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
Ford also topped Next Gen Stats’ “Remarkable Rushes” category for Week 15 with his 62-yard touchdown. Next Gen Stats estimated Ford should have gained 7 yards on the rushing attempt. His 55 “rushing yards over expected” were the most on one carry in the NFL for the week.
Also on top of a Next Gen Stats category for Week 15 was Cincinnati Bengals safety Jordan Battle, another former Alabama player. Battle recorded the league’s longest tackle in Week 15. He ran 69.5 yards to push Tennessee running back Tyjae Spears out of bounds at the Bengals 24-yard line at the end of a 43-yard pass play.
