Former Alabama running back makes another return to NFL

The Cleveland Browns have signed running back Kenyan Drake for their practice squad, the NFL team announced on Tuesday.

The Browns are Drake’s third NFL team this year. The former Alabama standout spent training camp and the preseason with the Indianapolis Colts. Released by the Colts when they reduced their preseason roster to the regular-season limit of 53 active players, Drake joined the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad on Sept. 20.

The Ravens released Drake on Oct. 17 after he played in two games as a practice-squad elevation. He had two receptions for 31 yards in his second time around with Baltimore.

Drake has run for 3,866 yards and 33 touchdowns on 867 carries in 103 NFL regular-season games. He also has 218 receptions for 1,655 yards and eight touchdowns.

Drake joined Cleveland as it released running backs Nate McCrary and Jordan Wilkins from the practice squad.

A third-round draft choice in 2016 after playing for Alabama’s CFP national championship team in 2015, Drake started his NFL career in Miami. The Dolphins traded him to the Arizona Cardinals in the middle of his fourth campaign.

As the Cardinals’ No. 1 running back, Drake exceeded his rushing stats with Miami in less than half the games. In 2020, Drake had 955 yards and 10 touchdowns on 239 rushing attempts in 15 games for Arizona.

After that season, Drake signed as a free agent with the Las Vegas Raiders to form a tandem with Josh Jacobs, another former Alabama running back.

Drake ran for 254 yards and two touchdowns on 63 carries and caught 30 passes for 291 yards and one TD in 2021 before he suffered a broken ankle in a 17-15 loss to the Washington Football Team on Dec. 5. He missed Las Vegas’ final five regular-season games and a playoff contest.

Released by the Raiders with a season left on his contract, Drake signed with Ravens 11 days before their first game in the 2022 regular season. He had 482 yards and four touchdowns on 109 carries and 17 receptions for 89 yards and one touchdown for Baltimore last season.
