Former Alabama RB in line for bigger role with Browns

Can you name all the former Alabama running backs who are on NFL rosters with training camps opening for the 2023 season? And do you know which one could be preparing for a much bigger role this season than he had in 2022?

The lineup of former Alabama running backs in the NFL makes an accomplished list:

· The Buffalo Bills’ Damien Harris was on the move in free agency in the offseason after an injury-affected season with the New England Patriots in 2022. The previous season, he ran for 15 touchdowns.

· The Pittsburgh Steelers’ Najee Harris led the NFL in touches as a rookie and has run for 1,000 yards in both his seasons in the league.

· The Tennessee Titans’ Derrick Henry is among the eight players in NFL history with 2,000 rushing yards in a season, and the two-time rushing champion finished as the runner-up in 2022.

· The Las Vegas Raiders’ Josh Jacobs led the NFL with 1,653 rushing yards and 2,053 yards from scrimmage in 2022.

· The Washington Commanders’ Brian Robinson Jr. overcame getting shot twice two weeks before the start of the season to become his team’s rushing leader with 797 yards as a rookie in 2022.

But the NFL has one more former Crimson Tide ball-carrier: Jerome Ford of the Cleveland Browns.

There are a couple of reasons that Ford might not come to mind with the other Alabama running backs.

For one, Ford transferred after playing his first two college seasons with the Tide. He ran for 37 yards on seven carries before being redshirted after four games in 2018, then had 114 yards and three touchdowns on 24 rushing attempts in 2019 before leaving for Cincinnati.

For another, Ford had eight carries for 12 yards as a rookie after the Browns added him in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Ford made his contributions for Cleveland on special teams, where he had 30 kickoff returns for 723 yards, the most in the AFC in 2022.

The Browns didn’t need Ford in their backfield last season. But it’s likely they will this season.

When Cleveland drafted Ford, its running-back depth chart included Nick Chubb, coming off three consecutive Pro Bowl selections; former NFL rushing leader Kareem Hunt and D’Ernest Johnson, who had 245 rushing yards in two emergency starts in 2021.

In 2022, Chubb made the Pro Bowl again with 1,525 rushing yards, and he’ll be the Browns’ No. 1 ball-carrier for the sixth straight year in 2023.

But Hunt and Johnson are no longer with Cleveland. Hunt remains an unsigned free agent, and Johnson left for the Jacksonville Jaguars when free agency opened in March.

“Anytime you move on from a vet, it gives some other players the chance to step up,” Browns general manager Andrew Berry said on Sunday. “We feel really good about Jerome. He had a very strong spring, particularly in his pass-protection ability, the mental side of it. A big reason that we drafted him in ‘22 was because of his ability as a receiver, and we think he’ll be able to play that role really well.”

Ford ran for 1,319 yards and 19 touchdowns on 215 carries and caught 21 passes for 220 yards and one touchdown for Cincinnati in 2021, his final college season. But he played only 14 offensive snaps as an NFL rookie.

Despite that limited exposure, Ford had more rushing yards in 2022 than all but Chubb among the six running backs on Cleveland’s training-camp roster. The other four players combined for a net of minus-4 rushing yards last season.

“Jerome looks good,” Chubb said on Sunday about Ford as he worked at his second NFL training camp. “He’s fast. He’s very fast. He’s smooth. He can do anything you ask him to do. He’s a special player. …

“He’s more mature, I would say that. He understands the playbook. He understands what his role is and what he needs to do. Just overall, he’s matured a lot.”

The Browns held their second training-camp practice on Sunday at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Cleveland will practice six more times on its retreat before starting work at its Berea, Ohio, facility on Aug. 1.

The Browns will kick off the NFL’s preseason schedule at 7 p.m. CDT Aug. 3, when they square off against the New York Jets in the annual Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. NBC will televise the game.
