Former Alabama QB joins Scott Cochran’s staff at UWA

Scott Cochran is getting the band back together at West Alabama.

The former Alabama football strength and conditioning coach has hired Blake Sims to be the Tigers’ receivers coach, the program announced Thursday. Sims played for Alabama from 2010-14, starting 14 games at quarterback in 2014.

“Blake Sims, as everyone knows, was an electric player for us at Alabama, but what he brought off the field is why he’s perfect for this Wide Receiver position,” Cochran said in a statement announcing the hire. “His energy, his enthusiasm to help young men develop is going to be his biggest attribute to this organization.”

Sims was part of two teams that won national championships during the 2011 and 2012 seasons. He then beat out Jake Coker for the starting quarterback job in 2014, leading Alabama to the Sugar Bowl where it lost to Ohio State.

Cochran has also hired former Alabama player Ronnie Clark to be his running backs coach at UWA. Clark was a running back for the Crimson Tide from 2014-18.

Sims has spent the past two years coaching high school football. Clark also spent some time coaching high school football after his playing career ended.

“Excited and fired up for Ronnie,” Cochran said. “I know that he will make the Running Backs so much better with attention, details, and playing fast and physical.”
