Former Alabama punter comes in from NFL free agency at last minute
JK Scott’s contract with the Los Angeles Chargers was due to expire at 3 p.m. CDT Wednesday, and the former Alabama punter could begin negotiating with other teams at 11 a.m. Monday.
But Scott won’t need to field offers from other NFL clubs. He’s staying with the Chargers.
Scott and Los Angeles have agreed on a two-year, $6 million contract extension that includes $3.15 million on guaranteed money, NFL Network reported.
Only two NFL punters hold contracts for the 2025 season with a higher average value than Scott’s $3 million – the Seattle Seahawks’ Michael Dickson and Detroit Lions’ Jack Fox. Dickson is entering the final season of a four-year, $14.7 million contract. Fox had two seasons remaining on a four-year $14.065 million deal.
Scott averaged 46.7 yards on 72 punts in 2024, with a 41.9-yard net average in 2024. Scott’s punts pinned the Chargers’ opponent inside its 20-yard line 38.9 percent of the time, and he had four touchbacks.
Scott also had the first pass completion of his NFL career in 2024, his third season as the Los Angeles punter.
Scott entered the NFL as a fifth-round selection of the Green Bay Packers in the 2018 draft after establishing Alabama career records for punts, punting yards and punting average.
In three seasons with the Packers, Scott averaged 44.6 yards on 194 punts.
On the day that NFL teams had to reduce their preseason rosters to the regular-season limit for 2021, Green Bay obtained punter Corey Bojorquez in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams and waived Scott, even though he had a year left on his contract.
Scott was out of football until signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Dec. 31, 2021. With regular punter Logan Cooke sidelined by a knee injury, the Jaguars picked up Scott, and he averaged 39.8 yards on four punts with no return yards in a 50-10 loss to the New England Patriots on Jan. 2.
Scott signed a one-year, $965,000 contract with the Chargers on March 21, 2022. He briefly entered free agency in 2023 before returning to Los Angeles for a two-year, $4 million contract.
Scott has appeared in 100 NFL regular-season games and has a 45.1-yard average on his 418 career punts. Scott also has punted in six playoff contests.
