Former Alabama prep star takes NFL job held by Mac Jones
The Jacksonville Jaguars are signing former Spain Park High School star Nick Mullens to back up quarterback Trevor Lawrence, a position held by former Alabama All-American Mac Jones in the 2024 season.
Like Mullens, Jones is becoming an unrestricted free agent this week.
Mullens’ current two-year, $4 million contract with the Minnesota Vikings expires at 3 p.m. CDT Wednesday, when he can sign with the Jaguars. NFL players with contracts expiring on Wednesday could begin negotiating with other teams at 11 a.m. Monday.
Mullens and the Jaguars reached an agreement on a two-year, $6.5 million contract that includes $3 million in guaranteed money, NFL Network reported.
After passing for 1,306 yards in 2023 while filling in for Kirk Cousins, Mullens threw only two passes in 2024 as Sam Darnold handled the quarterback duties for Minnesota. Darnold also reached a contract agreement as an impending free agent on Monday that will take him to the Seattle Seahawks.
Lawrence joined Jacksonville as the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Through his first three seasons, he had missed one start. But injuries sidelined Lawrence for seven games in 2024, with Jones starting in his place.
In 33 NFL games, Mullens has completed 530-of-805 passes for 6,429 yards with 34 touchdowns and 31 interceptions.

Mullens has started 20 NFL regular-season games, and only three players in NFL history have had more passing yards in their first 20 starts. With 5,662 passing yards in that span, Mullens trails Patrick Mahomes, Kurt Warner and Justin Herbert. Mahomes with the Kansas City Chiefs and Herbert with the Los Angeles Chargers are current quarterbacks with Pro Bowl selections on their resumes. Warner is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
At Spain Park in Hoover, Mullens won the Gatorade Alabama Football Player of the Year Award for the 2012 season, when he threw for 3,649 yards and 40 touchdowns.
At Southern Miss, Mullens set records for career, single-season and single-game passing yards and career, single-season and single-game touchdown passes. Mullens won Conference USA’s Offensive Player of the Year Award for the 2015 season.
Mullens entered the NFL in 2017 as an undrafted rookie with the San Francisco 49ers. Between four seasons with San Francisco and a trade that brought him to the Vikings on Aug. 22, 2022, Mullens was on the rosters of the Philadelphia Eagles, Cleveland Browns and Las Vegas Raiders.
