Former Alabama prep star reaches 1,000 receiving yards

Wide receiver Nico Collins caught a 13-yard pass from quarterback C.J. Stroud on the second snap of the Houston Texans’ game against the New York Jets on Sunday to become the ninth player from an Alabama high school to recorded 1,000 receiving yards in an NFL season.

Unfortunately for Collins and the Texans, the former Clay-Chalkville star aggravated a calf injury and missed the remainder of the contest as Houston lost to the Jets 30-6.

Collins has 60 receptions for 1,004 yards and six touchdowns in 2023, his third NFL campaign. In his first two seasons, Collins had 70 receptions for 927 yards and three touchdowns in 24 games. Injuries cost him to miss 10 games, and Collins missed the Texans’ 30-27 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Nov. 12 because of a calf injury.

Collins joined Harlon Hill, Red Phillips, John Stallworth, Ozzie Newsome, Terrell Owens, Jerricho Cotchery, Julio Jones and Darnell Mooney as former Alabama high school standouts who have recorded 1,000-yard receiving seasons in the NFL.

Collins recorded the 53rd 1,000-yard receiving season in the NFL by a player from an Alabama high school or college. Collins became the 18th player on the state’s 1,000-yard list.
