Former Alabama prep star plays 116 snaps in an NFL game

Four Philadelphia Eagles played 95 defensive snaps in a 37-34 overtime victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, the most in the NFL this season.

Philadelphia safeties Reed Blankenship (a West Limestone High School alumnus) and Kevin Byard and cornerbacks James Bradberry (a Pleasant Grove High School and Samford alumnus) were on the field for all the Bills’ offensive snaps.

But Blankenship went beyond that: The former Alabama prep star was on the field for 21 special-teams plays, too. He came away with 10 tackles on the defense and one on special teams.

“It’s a lot of snaps,” Blankenship said on Wednesday, “but if my name is called upon, whatever it is, however many snaps, I’m up for it. I know they trust me as a player and as a person. It doesn’t matter what I’m asked to do. I love the game so much, I’m up for anything.”

The most recent player to see more action in an NFL game than Blankenship did on Sunday was Tennessee Titans safety Jordan Babineaux in a 44-41 overtime victory against the Detroit Lions on Sept. 23, 2012. Babineaux had 96 defensive snaps and 22 special-teams plays.

A second-year player from Middle Tennessee, Blankenship made the Philadelphia roster last season as an undrafted free agent and became a full-time starter this season. Blankenship leads the Eagles with 74 tackles even though he missed two games with injuries.

“I can’t speak enough great things about Reed Blankenship,” Philadelphia special-teams coach Michael Clay said. “Going into the game, we weren’t anticipating him playing all those special-teams plays, but talking to him on Saturday night, saying, ‘Hey, you may have to play these,’ he didn’t bat an eye. Ready to go. That just shows the determination that Reed Blankenship has. It shows the level of endurance he has to play at such a high level, not just on defense but also on punt and on kickoff. …

“It’s just something that you’re in awe of as a coach.”

Snap counts have been compiled by the NFL since only 2012. During that time, one other player with Alabama roots was on the field for at least 110 plays. Arizona safety Rashad Johnson had 111 in the Cardinals’ 24-20 victory over the Eagles on Oct. 26, 2014. The former Sulligent High School and Alabama standout had 92 defensive snaps and 19 special-teams plays.

At 10-1 and on a five-game winning streak, Philadelphia will square off against the San Francisco 49ers in a rematch of last season’s NFC title game. The 49ers have an 8-3 record and visit Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia at 3:25 p.m. CST Sunday.
