Former Alabama prep star on Commissioner Exempt List
Justyn Ross’ arrest earlier this week has sidelined the Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver. Ross went on the Commissioner Exempt List on Friday, which prevents him from practicing or playing with the NFL team until he is restored to the active roster.
On Tuesday, the former Central-Phenix City standout entered two not-guilty pleas to misdemeanor charges in Johnson County (Kansas) District Court. At his arraignment, Ross was charged with domestic battery with no priors and criminal damage of less than $1,000.
Ross had been arrested on Monday afternoon in Shawnee, Kansas. After the arraignment, Ross was released on a $2,500 personal-recognizance bond. He’s due back in the courtroom of Judge Curtis Sample in Olathe, Kansas, at 1:30 p.m. CDT Dec. 4.
The Commissioner Exempt List is not the same as being suspended by the league commissioner. A player on the Commissioner Exempt List continues to be paid, but he’s prohibited from practicing or playing until the legal matter that prompted the action is concluded to the NFL’s satisfaction.
Ross had practiced with the Chiefs on Wednesday and Thursday.
“We’ll just let it play out the way it goes,” Kansas City coach Andy Reid said on Friday. “That’s what that list is for until all the information is gathered. …
“You let that play out. That’s what you do. That’s why it’s there and why the league has that.”
According to the NFL Player Personnel Policy Manual: “Only the commissioner has the authority to place a player on the Exempt List; clubs have no such authority, and no exemption, regardless of circumstances, is automatic. The commissioner also has the authority to determine in advance whether a player’s time on the Exempt List will be finite or will continue until the commissioner deems the exemption should be lifted and the player returned to the active list.”
Ross is in his second season with the Chiefs, although he did not play during his first campaign. Ross joined the Chiefs last year as an undrafted rookie from Clemson. But coming off foot surgery, he spent the 2022 campaign on injured reserve.
This season, Ross has played in all seven games and has been on the field for 81 offensive snaps and 63 special-teams plays. He has three receptions for 34 yards.
At Central-Phenix City, Ross earned ASWA first-team All-State recognition in 2016 and 2017 after being a second-team pick in 2015. As a senior, Ross caught 37 passes for 730 yards and 13 touchdowns and returned 14 punts for a 27.4-yard average and two touchdowns.
