Former Alabama prep star on big money: ‘Just the beginning’
Houston Texans wide receiver Nico Collins hit the jackpot in the NFL this week. But that doesn’t mean he’s ready to rest on his money. He has other goals to achieve.
The former Clay-Chalkville High School standout signed a three-year, $72.75 million contract extension with the Texans.
“I feel like right now, man, I’m speechless,” Collins said on Thursday. “Don’t really know how to feel yet. It hasn’t hit me yet. It’s a blessing. I feel like it’s something you’ve been dreaming of your whole life to get that, and I feel like for me right now it’s continue to work on my game, remember why, remember my mission, remember my end goal because right now it’s just the beginning.
“I feel like I got a lot more to prove, a lot more to do on my game, so I feel like for me, continue to be myself, continue to have my head down, one foot in front of the other and thank God for it all.”
In his third NFL season since joining Houston from Michigan in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Collins had 80 receptions for 1,297 yards and eight touchdowns in 15 regular-season games and 11 receptions for 164 yards and one touchdown in two playoff games.
The breakout season prompted the Texans to put Collins under contract through the 2027 season, and the wide receiver’s focus is on the future.
“I feel like just become a better man, a better person, a better teammate, a better route runner, a better receiver because you can’t never get comfortable with your game,” Collins said. “I feel like I got this, but I feel like there’s more to be proved, more game to work on myself and be available for the team. I feel like that’s my goal, that’s my mindset – be available for the team, continue to work on myself, work on my mental, work on my body, continue to thank God for it all, continue to be myself, and I feel like everything else will fall in place.”
Aiming to build on their 2023 season, which included 10 regular-season wins and a playoff victory, the Texans landed four-time Pro Bowl and six-time 1,000-yard receiver Stefon Diggs in a trade with the Buffalo Bills in April.
Houston also is looking forward to a full season with Tank Dell and the continued recovery of John Metchie III.
A rookie who started his college career at Alabama A&M, Dell had 47 receptions for 709 yards and seven touchdowns when he broke his leg in the 11th game of the season. A former Alabama standout, Metchie had 16 receptions for 158 yards in 2023 after missing the 2022 season following a cancer diagnosis.

“I feel like as a unit, as a receiver room, we got the right pieces for everybody to shine,” Collins said. “I feel like we’re all going to push each other, which we’re doing right now and will continue to do, and just play for one another. Play like that, man, can’t nobody stop you. …
“I feel like we know our mission. We’re trying to win a Super Bowl, so you can’t be selfish. Got to be a team player. Got to have a joy for your brother out there making plays. I feel like as a unit, that’s what we’re doing, out there building that chemistry, building that bond. You build that bond, it’s unbreakable. I feel like that’s where we’re at right now, it’s why we’re here at OTAs, getting that chemistry, getting those reps, getting that extra time in bonding, so come on Sundays shining.”
The Texans have only their mandatory minicamp, scheduled for June 4-6, remaining in their offseason program before their summer break until training camp.
