Former Alabama prep star gets $51.1 million NFL deal

When his current contract with the New York Jets expires at 3 p.m. CDT Wednesday, former St. Paul’s Episcopal standout Bryce Huff will sign a three-year, $51.1 million deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, NFL Network and ESPN reported on Monday.

When he does, Huff will make history. No undrafted free agent who was not a quarterback has signed an NFL contract of that value.

Huff became a coveted free agent after he recorded 10 sacks, 21 quarterback hits and 33 pressures on 480 defensive snaps (42 percent of the Jets’ total) during the 2023 season.

Huff was an All-State defensive lineman in 2015, when St. Paul’s Episcopal won the AHSAA Class 5A championship.

The Mobile native entered the NFL from Memphis as an undrafted rookie in 2020. Huff showed pass-rush promise in his first three seasons with New York by registering 7.5 sacks in limited duty.

A restricted free agent last offseason, Huff stayed with the Jets after they put a second-round tender on him. That was worth $4.304 million for the 2023 season after he had a $2.3 million contract for his first three seasons.

On Monday, Huff said goodbye to New York in a message posted on social media.

“I just wanna say thank you to everybody that’s been following my journey since I showed up in New York four years ago,” Huff wrote. “The memories I made in MetLife and in the city of New York will be cherished forever.

“The constant words of encouragement from fans from the day I signed as an undrafted free agent to my last snap as a Jet kept me going through the good and the bad times.

“Y’all are real ones.

“The support from my coaches and brothers that put in work with me every day was crucial in my development as a player and as a man, and I have nothing but love for each and every one of them.

“It’s been fun.”
