Former Alabama prep star filming movie in NFL offseason

Las Vegas Raiders running back Ameer Abdullah’s offseason plans include something different from the usual NFL routine of working out or traveling. The former Homewood High School star has a role in the movie “Break the Cycle,” which starts shooting in March.

With a cast that includes Cuba Gooding Jr., Vivica A. Fox and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, “Break the Cycle” will include Abdullah as the character K-Money.

Former Tennessee standout and NBA player Jarnell Stokes wrote the screenplay for the movie, which looks at the lives of two brothers raised by their grandmother after childhood tragedy. One brother is a basketball prospect hoping to reach the NBA, and the other is mired in a life of street crime.

“This film is a heart-pounding journey through the world of streetball that explores themes of family, ambition and the moral complexities of urban life,” Stokes said. “It tells the story of navigating a treacherous path, an unfortunate reality for far too many young boys in our urban communities. I’m so excited to have written my first film and honored to be working with such a tremendously talented group of actors to bring this project to life.”

In his senior season at Homewood, Abdullah ran for 1,800 yards and 24 touchdowns, had 515 receiving yards and returned four punts for touchdowns for the Patriots.

In his final three seasons at Nebraska, Abdullah ran for 4,438 yards and 36 touchdowns before entering the NFL as a second-round selection in the 2015 NFL Draft. With the Cornhuskers, Abdullah was a finalist for the Doak Walker Award, the Paul Hornung Award and the Wuerffel Trophy in 2014.

With the Detroit Lions, Abdullah led the NFL in kickoff-return yards as a rookie and was the team’s top ball-carrier in two of his first three seasons.

In nine NFL seasons, Abdullah has played in 125 regular-season and two playoff games. In his regular-season appearances, Abdullah has run for 1,683 yards and six touchdowns on 428 carries, caught 163 passes for 1,207 yards and eight touchdowns and returned 142 kickoffs for a 24.6-yard average.

In his second season with the Raiders, Abdullah ran for 89 yards on 15 carries, caught 19 passes for 131 yards and returned 26 kickoffs for a 20.9-yard average. He was on the field for 216 offensive snaps and 256 special-teams plays in 2023.

Abdullah is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on March 13.
