Former Alabama prep star ends Tennessee Titans’ season

Jacksonville Jaguars safety Rayshawn Jenkins was all over social media in the first half of Saturday night’s NFL game against Tennessee when Titans running back Derrick Henry stiff-armed him into the ground.

But in the fourth quarter, Jenkins got into another highlight – for his team.

When Jenkins knocked the football away from Tennessee quarterback Joshua Dobbs, weakside linebacker Josh Allen picked up the fumble and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown with 2:51 to play to lift Jacksonville to a 20-16 victory in the regular-season finale for both teams.

“It’s the break we needed,” Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said. “I think defense and special teams won this football game for us. And that’s OK. We found a way. That was a great play. We needed it. We needed to find a way. The guys did it. Hats off to our defense and the special teams.”

Tennessee, which never trailed in the game until Allen’s touchdown, would have won the AFC South title and hosted a first-round game in the conference playoffs next week if it had held on to its lead.

Instead, with the Titans’ seventh consecutive loss, the Jaguars earned those rewards with their victory after finishing the previous two seasons with the worst record in the NFL.

A former All-State wide receiver at Abbeville High School, Allen scored his first NFL touchdown on his third fumble recovery and will be going to the playoffs for the first time in his fourth NFL season.

“When you lose for so long, it teach you a little something about opportunities,” Allen said. “I think we capitalized on every opportunity we had. I’m blessed, I’m thankful to even be here in the position we are today. I love my teammates. We are brothers’ keepers no matter what situation arises. We just played till the clock hit zero zero zero.”

In addition to his fumble recovery for a touchdown, Allen made six tackles, recorded one tackle for loss, registered two quarterback hits and forced one fumble on Saturday night.

Jacksonville ran for only 19 yards in the game, while Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence completed 20-of-32 passes for 212 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.

For the second game in a row, Tennessee’s quarterback was Joshua Dobbs, who was signed off the Detroit Lions’ practice squad on Dec. 21. Dobbs completed 20-of-29 passes for 179 yards with one touchdown and one interception and ran for 32 yards on five carries in his second NFL start.

Five other players from Alabama high schools and colleges got on the field during the Tennessee-Jacksonville game:

· Titans safety Shyheim Carter (Alabama) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Titans linebacker Zach Cunningham (Pinson Valley) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Titans defensive end Da’Shawn Hand (Alabama) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Derrick Henry (Alabama) started at running back for the Titans. Henry ran for 109 yards on 30 carries and caught a 19-yard pass. Saturday night’s game was the 26th in Henry’s career (including the playoffs) in which he had at least 24 rushing attempts, and it was only the second of those that Tennessee lost. Henry finished the season with 1,538 yards and 13 touchdowns on 349 rushing attempts. He became the fourth NFL player with at least 1,500 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns in three seasons, joining LaDainian Tomlinson, Edgerrin James, Terrell Davis and Eric Dickerson, four members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

· Titans center Ben Jones (Bibb County) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Roger McCreary (Williamson, Auburn) started at cornerback for the Titans. McCreary made one tackle and broke up one pass.

· Jaguars tight end Gerrit Prince (UAB) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Titans linebacker Monty Rice (James Clemens) led the Titans with eight tackles.

· Jaguars wide receiver Calvin Ridley (Alabama) is suspended by the commissioner and not eligible to play.

· Jaguars offensive tackle Cam Robinson (Alabama) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Jaguars defensive end/outside linebacker Jordan Smith (UAB) is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

· Jaguars safety Daniel Thomas (Lee-Montgomery, Auburn) played but did not record any stats.

· Jaguars safety Deionte Thompson (Alabama) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Darious Williams (UAB) started at cornerback for the Jaguars. Williams made eight tackles and broke up a pass.

· Jaguars center Darryl Williams (Bessemer City) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Jaguars wide receiver Seth Williams (Paul Bryant, Auburn) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Titans quarterback Malik Willis (Auburn) dressed for the game but did not play.

Jacksonville completed its regular season with a 9-8 record and will be the No. 4 seed in the AFC playoffs.

Tennessee finished its season at 7-10, the Titans’ first losing season since 2015.
