Former Alabama prep star back in Las Vegas for Super Bowl

Defensive lineman Neil Farrell Jr. has played in only four games for the Kansas City Chiefs this season. But the former Murphy High School standout considers the trade that sent him from the Las Vegas Raiders to Kansas City on Aug. 29 as a “blessing” because he’s back in Las Vegas this week with the Chiefs for Sunday’s Super Bowl LVIII.

“It’s really a blessing, man,” Farrell said. “It’s great just to come around full circle. Started off here when the Raiders drafted me, but being traded to the Chiefs has been nothing but a blessing.”

Farrell joined the Raiders from LSU in the fourth-round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

As a rookie, Farrell played 158 defensive snaps in nine games. He made 12 tackles, recorded one tackle for loss and registered two quarterback hits in his first season.

During the offseason, Las Vegas signed defensive tackles Adam Butler and John Jenkins to join returning starters Bilal Nichols and Jerry Tillery. The Raiders also added Alabama defensive tackle Byron Young in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

At the same time, the Chiefs were dealing with the holdout of All-Pro defensive lineman Chris Jones, who was seeking a contract extension.

Kansas City placed Jones on the reserve/did not report list on Aug. 29, the same day the Chiefs acquired Farrell from the Raiders in exchange for a sixth-round selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.

It turned out Jones missed only the opening game of the season and earned All-Pro recognition again.

Farrell played 22 defensive snaps in a 23-20 victory over the New York Jets on Sept. 24, six defensive snaps in a 27-20 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Oct. 8, 13 defensive snaps in a 13-12 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Jan. 7 and five defensive snaps in a 17-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game on Jan. 28.

In Kansas City’s other 16 games this season, Farrell was a game-day inactive.

It remains to be seen if Farrell will be among the eligible players on the Chiefs’ game-day list. Each NFL team has an active roster of 53 players. But only 47 (or 48, if eight of them are offensive linemen) can play (along with two players from the practice squad and, if needed, a designated emergency quarterback). The practice-squad players must be elevated the day before the game, and the 47 or 48 eligible players must be named 90 minutes before kickoff.

Before going to LSU, Farrell earned first-team Class 7A All-State recognition at Murphy School in Mobile in the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
