Former Alabama prep standout wins NFL weekly award
Cincinnati Bengals kicker Evan McPherson is the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 4 of the 2022 NFL season.
In the Bengals’ 27-15 victory over the Miami Dolphins on Thursday, the former Fort Payne High School standout made field goals of 19 and 57 yards in the fourth quarter and connected on three extra points.

The 57-yard field goal is tied for the third-longest in Cincinnati history. McPherson also kicked the two longest – a 59-yarder against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the season-opening game on Sept. 11 and a 58-yarder against the Denver Broncos on Dec. 19.
Four games into his second NFL season, McPherson has made 12 of the 67 regular-season field goals of at least 50 yards in Bengals’ history, and he has four more than any other kicker has for Cincinnati. McPherson also made three field goals of 50 or more yards in the playoffs last season.
In 20 NFL regular-season games, McPherson has won three AFC Special Teams Player of the Week awards. He’s the second Bengals kicker to win at least that many. Doug Pelfrey won four during his seven seasons kicking for Cincinnati.
McPherson also won the award in Weeks 1 and 11 during his rookie season.
The other award winners for Week 4 of the 2022 season were Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith, NFC Offensive; Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, AFC Offensive; Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Haason Reddick, NFC Defensive; Buffalo Bills safety Jordan Poyer, AFC Defensive; and Minnesota Vikings kicker Greg Joseph, NFC Special Teams.
Three other players with Alabama football roots have won a Player of the Week award this season. Pittsburgh Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (Alabama) was the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 1, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (Alabama) was the AFC Offensive Player of the Week for Week 2 and Denver Broncos punter Corliss Waitman (South Alabama) was the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 3.
