Former Alabama prep standout staying with New York Jets

Linebacker Quincy Williams won’t become an unrestricted free agent on Wednesday when his current contract with the New York Jets expires.

Instead, ESPN, the New York Post and NJ.com reported, Williams and the Jets have agreed on a three-year, $18 million contract extension that includes $9 million in guaranteed money and another $3 million that could be earn through incentives.

Williams and his representatives could have begun negotiating with other teams about his next contract at 11 a.m. CDT Monday.

The former Wenonah High School standout joined the Jets as a waiver claim on Sept. 1, 2021, and has started 28 games over the previous two seasons.

Playing weakside linebacker for New York, Williams has recorded 216 tackles, five sacks, 21 tackles for loss, 10 quarterback hits, six pass breakups and three forced fumbles with the Jets.

A safety at Murray State, Williams joined the Jacksonville Jaguars as the 98th selection in the 2019 NFL Draft.

In each of his first two seasons, Williams had surgery during training camp – for a torn meniscus in 2019 and a core-muscle injury in 2020.

Despite the setback, Williams started eight games for Jacksonville as a rookie. In 11 games and 493 defensive snaps, Williams had 48 tackles and two tackles for loss as a rookie. But in 2020, Quincy Williams played only 89 defensive snaps in seven games and totaled 11 tackles, with one tackle for loss, for the season.

At the end of the preseason for the 2021 campaign, the Jaguars put him on waivers. By claiming Williams, the Jets made him teammates with his brother Quinnen Williams for the first time since they had been played at Wenonah in 2013.
