Former Alabama prep standout joining New York Giants
Defensive tackle Rakeem Nunez-Roches had signed his previous four NFL contracts with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But not this time.
On Monday night, the New York Daily News reported the former Central-Phenix City standout had agreed to join the New York Giants when he becomes an unrestricted free agent at 3 p.m. CDT Wednesday. The contract will be a three-year, $12 million deal with $7.5 million in guaranteed money, SiriusXM NFL Radio reported.

Nunez-Roches signed his previous contract – a two-year, $5 million deal – after the Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9 in Super Bowl LV to cap the 2020 NFL season. The contract extended Nunez-Roches’ stay with Tampa Bay to five seasons.
With 38 starts and 3.5 sacks in 102 NFL regular-season games, Nunez-Roches has made his living as a run-stopper and rotational defensive-interior player. He played in every game, including seven playoff contests, in his final four seasons with Tampa Bay.
Nunez-Roches got two of his sacks in 2022, when he reached career bests with 33 tackles and five tackles for loss.
The Giants have a Pro Bowler at nose tackle in Dexter Lawrence, but New York still finished 27th among the NFL’s 32 teams in rushing defense in the 2022 season.
Nunez-Roches played 1,738 defensive snaps over the past four seasons even though Tampa Bay had nose tackle Vita Vea. Nunez-Roches was on the field for 498 special-teams plays during those seasons.
Nunez-Roches entered the NFL from Southern Miss as a sixth-round draft choice of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2015. He spent his first three seasons with Kansas City, playing in 35 games with 11 starts.
The Indianapolis Colts, who acquired Nunez-Roches as a waiver claim, released the defensive lineman at the end of the 2018 preseason. Picked up by the Buccaneers in October, Nunez-Roches played in three games in 2018 before settling in as an every-game player in Tampa Bay.
