Former Alabama prep standout heads for Miami reunion

NFL free agency has reunited linebacker Malik Reed and coach Vic Fangio.

The former Dothan High School standout played his first three NFL seasons for Denver when Fangio was the Broncos’ head coach.

This offseason, Fangio became the Miami Dolphins’ defensive coordinator. On Saturday, Reed’s agent announced the linebacker had agreed to a one-year contract with the Dolphins after playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022.

On Wednesday, three Miami outside linebackers became unrestricted free agents, and Melvin Ingram, former Columbia High School standout Trey Flowers and Andrew Van Ginkel remain unsigned.

The Steelers traded a sixth-round draft pick to the Broncos on Aug. 30 to obtain Reed and a seventh-round choice. When 2021 NFL Defensive Player of the Year T.J. Watt sustained a pectoral injury in Pittsburgh’s season opener, Reed suddenly took on a larger role on the team.

In the seven games that Watt missed, Reed played 281 defensive snaps. In the nine games after Watt returned, Reed played 83.

In 2022, Reed recorded 25 tackles, one sack, four quarterback hits and two pass break-ups.

Reed entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie from Nevada in 2019.

In his three seasons with the Broncos, Reed registered 123 tackles, 15 sacks, 15 tackles for loss, 30 quarterback hits, four pass breakups, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. In 45 games, with 34 starts, Reed had 1,992 defensive snaps and 315 special-teams plays with Denver.

An injury to Bradley Chubb elevated Reed into the Broncos’ starting lineup in 2019. In 2020, perennial Pro Bowl outside linebacker Von Miller missed the entire season because of an ankle injury. In 2021, injuries caused Chubb to miss 10 games and Denver traded Miller to the Los Angeles Rams seven games into the campaign.
