Former Alabama prep standout changes teams in NFC East

Released by the Washington Commanders on Feb. 27, former Oxford High School standout Bobby McCain returned to the NFL on Tuesday without leaving the NFC East.

The New York Giants announced a contract agreement with the defensive back for a ninth NFL season.

In 2022, McCain started 16 of Washington’s 17 games and played 93 percent of the Commanders’ defensive snaps, working mostly at free safety but also getting some time at cornerback. He recorded a career-high 76 tackles, broke up five passes and forced one fumble in his second season with Washington.

McCain comes aboard after the Seahawks signed New York safety Julian Love, who started 16 games, played 95 percent of the Giants’ defensive snaps and made 124 tackles in 2022.

The Commanders released McCain even though he had a season remaining on a two-year, $10 million contract. McCain came to Washington after being released by the Miami Dolphins in 2021 halfway through a four-year, $27 million contract. The Commanders signed McCain to a one-year, $1.475 contract in 2021, then kept him out of free agency with a contract extension in 2022.

Terms of McCain’s contract with the Giants have not been reported, but it is a one-year deal.

McCain has played slot corner, outside corner, free safety and strong safety during his career.

In 121 NFL regular-season games, with 87 starts, McCain has 393 tackles, 11 interceptions (including one returned for a touchdown), 44 passes defended, four sacks, 12 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles.

In the 2015 NFL Draft, the Dolphins selected McCain in the fifth round from Memphis, where he was a four-year starter at cornerback.
