Former Alabama prep receiver gets $39 million NFL deal

The Atlanta Falcons are adding quarterback Kirk Cousins in free agency. They’re also adding a former Alabama prep standout for their new QB to throw to.

Atlanta and Chicago Bears wide receiver Darnell Mooney have reached an agreement on a three-year, $39 million contract that the former Gadsden City High School star will sign after he becomes an unrestricted free agent at 3 p.m. CDT Wednesday, NFL Network and ESPN reported on Tuesday. The deal includes $26 million in guaranteed money.

A fifth-round draft choice from Tulane in 2020, Mooney broke out for the Bears in his second season. After posting 61 receptions for 631 yards and four touchdowns as a rookie, Mooney had 81 receptions for 1,055 yards and four touchdowns in 2021.

In the past two seasons, Mooney totaled 71 receptions for 907 yards and three touchdowns as he missed seven games, although he remained Chicago’s leading wide receiver in 2022 and No. 2 in 2023.

Last season, Atlanta’s wide receivers caught four touchdown passes and only one had more than 251 receiving yards. In his second NFL season, Drake London led the Falcons with 69 receptions for 905 yards and two touchdowns in 2023.

Mooney earned All-State recognition at Gadsden City in 2015, when he caught 37 passes for 697 yards and nine touchdowns and returned three punts and one kickoff for touchdowns.
