The cornerback/kick-returner will change teams for a two-year contract with a maximum value of $5.5 million that includes a $1.4 million signing bonus, Aaron Wilson of KPRC-TV in Houston reported.

During the 2022 season, Smith returned 19 kickoffs for a 21.9-yard average and four punts for a 13.3-yard average. At cornerback, Smith intercepted Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott twice in the Texans’ 27-23 loss to the Cowboys on Dec. 11. Smith made two starts in Houston’s secondary last season.

Denver’s average of 17.5 yards per kickoff return was the NFL’s worst during the 2022 season.

Smith made the switch to cornerback at Central Arkansas after earning All-State recognition as a quarterback at Saks.

A sixth-round draft choice of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2018, Smith was the kick returner on the Professional Football Writers of America’s All-Rookie team.

Smith also spent time with the Green Bay Packers, Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts during his first three NFL seasons before joining the Texans in 2021.

In his first three seasons, Smith played 81 defensive snaps in 32 games, and the Chiefs dabbled with turning him into a running back in training camp in 2019. In his two seasons with the Texans, Smith was on the field for 381 defensive snaps and 709 special-teams plays.

During his career, Smith has returned 94 kickoffs for a 24.7-yard average with one touchdown and nine punts for a 6.0-yard average. On Dec. 19, 2021, Smith had a 98-yarder against the Jacksonville Jaguars  that was Houston’s first kickoff return for a touchdown since Oct. 4, 2009.
