Former Alabama prep DB signs his first NFL contract

Former McGill-Toolen Catholic High School standout Jakorian Bennett signed his first NFL contract on Friday, the Las Vegas Raiders announced.

The Raiders selected the cornerback from Maryland with the 104th pick in the 88th NFL Draft on April 29.

Las Vegas chose Bennett after he ran a 4.30-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine in March, the second-fastest recorded at the 2023 event and the third-fastest for a player from an Alabama high school or college at the combine this century.

Drafted players receive four-year contracts. The values of those contracts are based on draft position, the NFL’s salary cap of $224.8 million for the 2023 season and this year’s rookie compensation pool in a formula spelled out in the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the league and its players association.

While terms were not announced on Friday, the values of the contracts can be estimated, which the sports financial website spotrac.com has done. Bennett signed a contract with an estimated value of $4.664 million, including an $823,594 signing bonus.

Las Vegas had an unsettled situation at cornerback last season, and Bennett received work with the first-team defense during last week’s mandatory minicamp.

The Raiders had five cornerbacks play at least 25 percent of their defensive snaps in 2022, but none played more than 60. Three of those players remain on the roster, with Amik Robertson, Nate Hobbs and Sam Webb combining for 21 starts last season.

Las Vegas signed three cornerbacks in free agency, but Brandon Facyson, David Long Jr. and Duke Shelley combined to start 13 games last season.

“Spending time watching him in 2021 and 2022, the one thing that we saw was some growth and development as a defensive back,” Raiders general manager Dave Ziegler said about Bennett, “specifically he improved his ability to find the football, especially making plays down the field, which for a defensive back is one of the more difficult things where you’re running and tracking vertical routes. Your back’s to the quarterback. Being able to find and play the ball, we thought he improved in that area.

“He’s very fast as evident to his 40 speed. … And you can see that speed on tape in his ability to close space. Also good, sturdy build. Physical kid. Also someone we think is going to be able to contribute in the kicking game, which is important for us. His speed, explosiveness and, like I said, his growth from 2021 to ‘22, and we think there’s more growth for him to do, and we’re excited about that.”

Only three teams yielded more passing yards than the Raiders in 2022, and no team had fewer interceptions than Las Vegas’ six last season.

“An area we want to improve on as a team is ball disruption,” Ziegler said. “It wasn’t a statistical category that we ranked very highly in last year. And so like Jakorian, I think in the last two years he had more plays on the ball or was one of the top players in college football in terms of making plays on the ball.”
