Former Alabama players reacts to Tide out of CFP
The Alabama Crimson Tide is not in the College Football Playoff. The CFP committee decided to go with SMU over the Crimson Tide.
And, according to former Alabama players, the team has no one to blame but itself.
The Tide had the 16th toughest schedule and went 3-1 against teams in the top 25. SMU’s numbers: 60th in strength of schedule and 0-2 against the top 25.
However, the losses to Vanderbilt and Oklahoma, players said, were nails in the postseason coffin.
The committee also indicated it was reluctant to penalize teams that play in conference title games. SMU did. Alabama didn’t. And the way the Mustangs fought back from a three-touchdown deficit before finally losing to Clemson almost certainly had an impact among the 13 people making the decision.
“There was no winning here,” SEC Network analyst Greg McElroy, a former Alabama quarterback, said during the Selection Show. “It was a catch-22 for the committee. They went with what they thought was the most justifiable outcome. It’s hard to push back on it, but I don think moving forward with where we are with … we need to put a heavier weight on strength of schedule because Indiana’s schedule is not comparable to that of Ohio State’s schedule and they are playing in the same league.”
Here are just some of the thoughts from Alabama players, who took to social media to voice their opinions.
