Former Alabama pitcher getting another MLB opportunity

Pitcher Spencer Turnbull’s opportunity to put three injured-affected seasons behind him will come with the Philadelphia Phillies.

The former Alabama standout is signing a one-year, $2 million contract with the National League team, the Philadelphia Inquirer and MLB.com reported, although the Phillies have not announced the deal.

Since Turnbull pitched a no-hitter in the Detroit Tigers’ 5-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners on May 19, 2021, he has appeared in 10 Major League games.

Turnbull left his start against the Chicago White Sox on June 4, 2021, because of forearm soreness in his pitching arm. Damage to the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow sent him to Tommy John surgery, and Turnbull missed the 2022 season.

During his return in 2023, Turnbull dealt with neck problems and a cracked toenail. He made seven starts for the Tigers and posted a 1-4 record with a 7.26 earned-run average in 31 innings. Turnbull made two trips to the minors during the season and made eight more starts there.

The Phillies open spring training in Clearwater, Florida, this week with five pitchers on their roster who started at least 18 games for Philadelphia last season – Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Ranger Suarez, Taijuan Walker and Cristopher Sanchez.

In two seasons at Alabama, Turnbull had a 9-10 record with a 2.95 earned-run average in 30 starts. In 183.1 innings, he struck out 112 and yielded 153 hits and 85 walks. Turnbull left the Crimson Tide after the Tigers chose him in the second round of the 2014 draft.

Turnbull reached the big leagues late in the 2018 season.

Turnbull pitched in four games in 2018 and had a 6.06 ERA. In 2019, he made 30 starts with a 4.61 ERA. During the coronavirus pandemic-affected 2020 season, Turnbull had a 3.97 ERA in 11 starts. Before getting hurt in 2021, he had a 2.88 ERA in nine starts.

In his big-league career, Turnbull has pitched in 61 games for Detroit, with all but the first one a starting assignment. Turnbull has a 12-29 record with a 4.55 ERA. In 302.1 innings, Turnbull has struck out 280 and yielded 292 hits and 119 walks.
