Former Alabama OLB Keanu Koht commits to Vanderbilt from transfer portal

Former Alabama football outside linebacker Keanu Koht has found his next school. Koht committed to Vanderbilt out of the transfer portal, he announced Wednesday on social media.

Koht announced his intentions to enter the portal before the end of the 2024 regular season.

“After careful reflection and consideration, I’ve come to realize that I’ve outgrown the shoes I once wore here,” Koht said in a statement, announcing his departure from Alabama.

Koht finished the 2024 season with five total tackles, along with a fumble recovery and half a sack. He was suspended for what would have been his final two games at Alabama, against LSU and Mercer, a punishment Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer confirmed but did not give a reason for.

The 6-foot-4, 232-pound Koht was a four-star recruit in the class of 2021 according to the 247Sports composite. He spent three seasons in Tuscaloosa, but had trouble getting onto the field consistently on defense, in part due to injuries.

“Athletically he’s a freak,” UA defensive coordinator Kane Wommack said of Koht in March. “He does some things, the way he can bend off the edge, his explosive ability. He plays with an extremely high motor right now and he is grasping what we are doing from a schematic standpoint.”

Koht joins a Vanderbilt team that upset Alabama in Nashville in September, dealing one of the losses that eventually kept the Crimson Tide out of the College Football Playoff. The Commodores will finish the year in the Birmingham Bowl, their first time bowl-eligible under head coach Clark Lea.

Meanwhile, Alabama, sans Koht, will face Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl to end the season. That game is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT on Dec. 31 in Tampa, and will be aired on ESPN.
