Former Alabama linebacker signs with CFL team

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed former Alabama linebacker Jaylen Moody, the Canadian Football League team announced on Tuesday.

Saskatchewan signed Moody with linebacker Derrick Moncrief joining linebacker Justin Herdman-Reed on the sidelines at practice on Tuesday. A quadriceps injury has kept Herdman-Reed off the field, and Moncrief has a shoulder injury. (Moncrief played at Auburn in 2014 before transferring to Oklahoma State.)

Moody played the previous five seasons for the Crimson Tide. His main contributions came on special teams during his first four seasons. In 2022, Moody started eight games and played in 10. He started the first five games last season before a bruised kidney sidelined him for a game. After two games in a reserve role, Moody returned to the starting lineup for three games before a shoulder injury ended his season.

After the 2023 NFL Draft, Moody signed with the Cincinnati Bengals as a rookie free agent. After participating in the Bengals’ offseason program, training camp and preseason games, Moody was released on Aug. 29 when Cincinnati reduced its preseason roster to the regular-season limit of 53 active players.

Moody is only Alabama alumnus currently on a CFL active roster.

Saskatchewan has three regular-season games remaining, starting with Saturday’s game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

A four-game losing streak has dropped the Roughriders’ record to 6-9. But Saskatchewan has a two-game lead in the race for the CFL’s final playoff position in the 2023 Grey Cup field.
