Former Alabama lawmaker faces up to 20 years in prison after theft conviction

A former Alabama state legislator is facing a sentencing range of 2 to 20 years after being convicted Friday of first-degree theft, a felony, by a Montgomery County jury.

Will Dismukes, who once served in the Alabama House of Representatives, will be sentenced May 4, according to an order filed Friday by Montgomery County Circuit Judge Brooke Reid.

In 2020, Dismukes was arrested and charged in connection with a theft following a complaint from the owners of Weiss Flooring, his former employer, about the alleged theft of a large sum of money by an employee. Theft in the first degree involves money or property valued at $2,500 or more.

Dismukes, who lives in Prattville, served in the state legislature from 2018-2022. He lost his re-election bid last year when he was defeated in the Republican primary by Jerry Starnes – who went on to win the seat formerly held by Dismukes in the House.

Dismukes was embroiled in controversy during his time in the legislature, drawing national attention in 2020 when he posted a Facebook image of himself speaking at a birthday celebration for Nathan Bedford Forrest, the first grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. He subsequently resigned as pastor of a Baptist church following the uproar.

His support of preserving Confederate monuments also led to Democrats calling for his resignation from the House.
