Former Alabama high school stars will miss Super Bowl

In the Kansas City Chiefs’ 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in last season’s Super Bowl, wide receiver Kadarius Toney caught a 5-yard touchdown pass and recorded the longest punt return in the game’s history at 65 yards.

But the former Blount High School standout will not play for the Chiefs when they square off against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday. Neither will running back La’Mical Perine, a former Theodore High School standout, and wide receiver Justyn Ross, an alumnus of Central High School in Phenix City.

The three former Alabama prep stars were declared as game-day inactives on Sunday afternoon by Kansas City.

The designations leave two players with Alabama football roots eligible to take the field in Super Bowl LVIII – Chiefs defensive tackle Neil Farrell Jr. from Murphy High School in Mobile and 49ers cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. from South Alabama.

Toney had appeared on the Chiefs’ injury report for 12 consecutive weeks and missed the previous six games. But he wasn’t on the injury report this week, but Toney still won’t make his return to the field in Super Bowl LVIII.

Since returning from a six-game NFL suspension, Ross had played in five games and been inactive for two for Kansas City. He had played three offensive snaps and four special-teams plays in the Chiefs’ three playoff victories.

Perine had played in Kansas City’s past four games. He had 76 yards on 21 rushing attempts and 33 yards on three receptions in a 13-12 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers when the Chiefs rested many of their starters in the regular-season finale, then saw action on 37 special-teams plays in Kansas City’s AFC playoff games.

Perine is inactive as Jerick McKinnon returns to the backfield. A groin injury landed McKinnon on injured reserve on Dec. 24, the same day the Chiefs signed Perine from their practice squad to the active roster. But after missing six games, McKinnon was activated from IR on Saturday and will serve as the No. 3 running back behind Isiah Pacheco and Clyde Edwards-Helaire on Sunday.

The return of wide receiver Skyy Moore from injured reserve likewise hurt the chances of Ross and Toney being active on Sunday. Moore had missed the past six games because of a knee injury. But he returned to practice on Jan. 17 and was restored to the active roster on Wednesday.

Each NFL team has an active roster of 53 players. Only 47 (or 48, if eight of them are offensive linemen) can play (along with two players elevated from the practice squad and, if needed, a designated emergency quarterback). The active-roster players who will be game-day inactives must be named 90 minutes before kickoff.
