Former Alabama guard picked for Next Up Game

Guard JD Davison has played six minutes for the Boston Celtics this season. But the former Calhoun School and Alabama standout will be on the court at the NBA All-Star Weekend.

Davison will play in the NBA G League Next Up Game, which will be held on Feb. 18 at 12:30 p.m. CST at Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis before the 73rd NBA All-Star Game is played at 7 p.m. at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Davison earned the opportunity for his play with the Maine Celtics, Boston’s NBA G League affiliate.

Twenty-eight players were chosen for the event through a combination of fan votes and league selections. Davison was a league selection. The participating players were announced on Monday.

The players will be divided into four teams drafted by social-media basketball influencers, who will stream the games on their digital platforms.

NBA G League coaches will direct the squads in the semifinal games and a championship contest.

In 28 games for Maine this season, Davison has averaged 21.8 points, 8.8 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 1.3 steals.

Boston selected Davison from Alabama with the 53rd choice in the 2022 NBA Draft. As he is this season, Davison played his rookie season on a two-way contract. A two-way contract allows a player to move between a team’s NBA roster and its NBA G League affiliate without the waiver process.

Davison played in 12 games with Boston last season. In 66 minutes on the court with Boston, he had 19 points, nine rebounds, 11 assists, two steals and two blocks.

The 6-foot-3 guard played in 44 games with Maine last season and averaged 13.2 points, 7.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds. His 339 assists were the fourth-most in the G League in the 2022-23 season and were the second-most in one season in franchise history.

Davison earned Alabama’s Mr. Basketball Award in 2020 and 2021 while leading the Calhoun School in Letohatchee to the AHSAA Class 2A championship in each season. Davison averaged 33.4 points, 12.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists as a junior and 32.4 points, 10.9 rebounds and 4.7 assists as a senior at Calhoun.

Davison averaged 8.5 points, 4.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game in his only season at Alabama.
