Former Alabama golfer captures LPGA Tour victory

Former Alabama All-American Cheyenne Knight posted the second victory of her LPGA Tour career on Saturday. Knight teamed with Elizabth Szokol to win the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational.

Knight and Szokol carded a 5-under 65 in better-ball play during the final round at Midland Country Club in Midland, Michigan, to capture the LPGA Tour’s only team event by one stroke over Matilda Castren and Kelly Tan.

Knight and Szokol came back to finish the final five holes after a lightning delay of about 100 minutes on Saturday. They birdied the par-4 15th and 17th holes coming in while Castren and Tan had one birdie and three pars over the final four holes.

“I don’t think we had our ‘A’ game today,” Knight said. “But we were making birdies. It was tough, I think, kind of like going in with the delay and just, like, coming back out and our lead just evaporated. I mean, we just hung in there.”

The winning score was 23 under after Knight and Szokol shot 69 in alternate shot in the first round, 61 in better ball in the second round and 62 in alternate shot in the third round.

Knight’s previous victory on the LPGA Tour came in the Ascendant LPGA on Oct. 6, 2019.

Another former Alabama golfer, Emma Talley, tied for third in the tournament playing with Jodi Ewart Shadoff.

A three-time All-American for the Crimson Tide, Knight was the SEC’s Player of the Year in 2017.
