Former Alabama defensive lineman won’t be back for Super Bowl

The deadline passed on Wednesday for the Philadelphia Eagles to restore defensive tackle Byron Young to their active roster without any action by the NFL team.

The Eagles have one game left in their season – Super Bowl LIX on Feb. 9 – and Young will be ineligible to play.

Young has been on injured reserve since Oct. 25 because of a hamstring injury, and the former Alabama defensive lineman will finish his second NFL season there.

Philadelphia had designated Young for return on Jan. 9, which allowed him to return to practice. The action also opened a 21-day window for the Eagles to retore Young to their practice roster. That three-week period ended on Wednesday, and after Young participated in nine full practices since returning, Philadelphia declined to change his status.

Young played in 54 games, with 26 starts, at Alabama, where he was a member of the undefeated 2020 CFP national-championship game.

A third-round draft choice of Las Vegas in 2023, Young played 99 defensive snaps in six games as a rookie with the Raiders.

In 2024, Young survived Las Vegas’ initial roster reduction from the preseason size to the regular-season limit on Aug 27. But when the Raiders were awarded defensive back Thomas Harper and defensive tackle Jonah Laulu as waiver claims on Aug. 28, Young was one of the players waived to create roster spots for the claimed pair.

Young then became a waiver claim on Aug. 29, as Philadelphia did not let him reach free agency. But Young was designated as a game-day inactive for all six of the Eagles’ contests before getting hurt, so he will finish his second NFL season without playing.

The Eagles will square off against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX at 5:30 p.m. CST Feb. 9 at Caesars Superdome in Kansas City, Missouri. FOX will televise the game.
