Former Alabama offensive coordinator Brian Daboll is The Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year for the 2022 season.

Daboll won the award on Thursday night for his work in his first season as the head coach of the New York Giants.

Daboll left Alabama after the Crimson Tide won the 2017 CFP national championship to become the offensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills. After four seasons in that position, Daboll took the reins of the New York Giants in 2022 and guided the team to a 9-7-1 record and its first playoff berth since 2016.

The Giants defeated the Minnesota Vikings 31-24 on Jan. 15 for New York’s first postseason victory since downing the New England Patriots 21-17 in Super Bowl XLVI on Feb. 5, 2012.

From the panel of 50 selectors, Daboll received 16 first-place votes, 13 second-place votes and four third-place votes for 123 points, with first-place votes counting five points, second-place votes counting three points and third-place votes counting one point.

Kyle Shanahan of the San Francisco 49ers finished as the runner-up with 100 points – 12 first-place, 10 second-place and 10 third-place votes.

Other coaches receiving first-places votes were the Buffalo Bills’ Sean McDermott with seven, Philadelphia Eagles’ Nick Sirianni with six, Jacksonville Jaguars’ Doug Pederson with five, Kansas City Chiefs’ Andy Reid with two and Detroit Lions’ Dan Campbell and Minnesota Vikings’ Kevin O’Connell with one apiece.
