Former Alabama assistant Bo Davis leaves Texas for LSU DL coach job
Former Alabama football assistant coach Bo Davis is taking his talents to Baton Rouge. Davis, who most recently worked under Steve Sarkisian as Texas’ defensive line coach, is taking the same job at LSU, the school announced on Wednesday.
Davis worked two stints as defensive line coach at Alabama, from 2007-10 and 2014-15. He won a national title as a member of the staff at LSU in 2003, under Nick Saban, and played for the Tigers as a nose guard from 1990-92.
“As a defensive line coach Bo brings a wealth of proven success at both the professional and collegiate level throughout his distinguished career,” LSU head coach Brian Kelly said in a release. “Additionally, coach Davis is an outstanding recruiter and developer of the players in his charge. I am excited to welcome back to LSU coach Bo Davis.”
Davis resigned from Alabama during an NCAA inquiry into possible recruiting violations. Since then, he worked stints with the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars and Detroit Lions, plus UTSA, before joining the Longhorns with Sarkisian before the 2021 season.
He helped form the Texas defensive line into one of the nation’s best throughout his time in Austin. This year’s Longhorn group included consensus all-American and Outland Trophy winner T’Vondre Sweat and Big 12 defensive lineman of the year Byron Murphy.
Texas beat Alabama in September on the way to a College Football Playoff bid. The Longhorns lost to Washington in the Sugar Bowl to end the season.
According to Wilson Alexander of the Advocate, Davis signed a three-year deal for $4.05 million with LSU, starting at $1.25 million for the 2024 season and escalating each year.
Davis joins an LSU defense that also recently added a new coordinator. The Tigers poached Blake Baker from Missouri to run the unit, after he turned around the MU defense over the past two seasons.
Alabama and LSU are scheduled to face off Nov. 9 in Baton Rouge. The Crimson Tide won the 2023 edition of the game 42-28 at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
