Forecasters bet on Hurricane Lee forming late this week

There could be another storm in the tropical Atlantic Ocean later this week, and it will have hurricane forecasters watching its path closely.

The system is in the central Atlantic and is not even a tropical depression yet, according to the National Hurricane Center.

But it appears to be getting more organized, and forecasters are expecting a tropical depression to form in the next few days.

Here it is on Monday morning (on the lower right part of the image):

The concentrated area of storms on the lower right is a tropical wave that could become a depression soon.

From there it could become Tropical Storm Lee, and some forecast models predict it could become a powerful hurricane as it tracks northwestward in the Atlantic later this week.

That raises concerns for those in the Caribbean and along the U.S. East Coast, but it’s too soon to say if the potential Lee could affect them.

However, forecast models are suggesting the answer could be no.

The long-range tracks for most models take the storm north of the Caribbean and then suggest it will curve back to the northeast and out to sea before it reaches the U.S.

But it should be stressed that it’s way too soon to say that is definitely going to happen, which is why forecasters will be closely watching this system all week.

The hurricane center on Monday was also tracking two other storms in the central Atlantic — Tropical Storm Gert and Tropical Depression Katia. Neither is a threat to the U.S., and both of them are expected to fall apart of be absorbed by other systems in the next few days.

Other than that the hurricane center was also watching another tropical wave close to the coast of Africa. However it is expected to take a more northwest track that would keep it safely out at sea.

The Atlantic hurricane season is in what is typically its busiest stretch, with the climatological peak coming on Sept. 10.

The last official day of the season will be Nov. 30.
