Football High Live: Updates, scores from Friday’s playoff games
The 2022 high school football playoffs open tonight with one of the state’s biggest records on the line.
UMS-Wright coach Terry Curtis enters tonight’s Class 5A first-round game with Headland tied with former Vestavia Hills coach Buddy Anderson atop the all-time AHSAA coaching victories list with 346. If the top-ranked and unbeaten Bulldogs advance, Curtis will hold the mark by himself. Curtis’ overall record entering tonight’s game is 346-92.

Other intriguing first-round matchups include Hewitt-Trussville at Florence, Dothan at Foley, Pinson Valley at Mountain Brook, Faith Academy at Eufaula, Spanish Fort at Pike Road and Mobile Christian at Houston Academy. Check back frequently for updates and highlights.
As the night concludes, we will have all the final scores as well as next week’s playoff pairings. Here we go. …
6:51 PM, Streak busters: Region 4 has had a tough time making too much headway against Region 3 teams in the Class 7A playoffs. Will it change tonight? The matchups are Bob Jones at Hoover, Huntsville at Thompson, Vestavia Hills at Austin and Hewitt-Trussville at Florence. Definitely a storyline to watch.
6:45 PM, Record Chaser: Terry Curtis goes for Win No. 347 tonight, which would make him the AHSAA’s single leader in career victories. His UMS team hosts Headland.
6:37 PM, Away we go: Andalusia welcomes Jackson tonight in what should be one of several good Class 4A first-round matchups. Statewide coaches voted Andalusia one of the best Friday night atmospheres in an AL.com survey this summer.
5:54 PM, Big commitment: Reigning national champ Georgia came into the state and grabbed a Friday commitment from one of the state’s best juniors. Chilton County LB Demarcus Riddick. The top three players in Alabama in the Class of 2024 — according to the 247 composite rankings — are now all committed. Riddick is No. 2. Clay-Chalkville WR Jaylen Mbakwe (1) and Foley WR Perry Thompson (3) are both committed to Alabama.
3 PM, The Big Story: The biggest story leading up to tonight’s games statewide was the AHSAA’s investigation into a possible violation of the bona fide move rule at Saraland. On Wednesday, the Spartans were cleared and will host Wetumpka tonight in the first round.
