Food Giant opens in Birmingham 'food desert'

Food Giant opens in Birmingham ‘food desert’

A new Food Giant grocery store opened on Wednesday in Five Points West, fulfilling a pledge Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin made to bring fresh groceries to a neighborhood he called a “food desert.”

The Food Giant in the 2200 block of Bessemer Road occupies a 22,000-square-feet building that once housed a Winn-Dixie supermarket in Five Points West.

“I made a promise to bring healthy food options to the residents of Five Points West community,” Woodfin said. “I’m proud that we’ve made it a reality.”

The city offered $640,000 in incentives to Mitchell Retail Properties, plus a 10-year revenue sharing plan of 50 percent of sales taxes up to $1 million.
