Food City parent company buys 2 acres near Huntsville’s Stovehouse

The parent company of grocery chain Food City has purchased two acres of land near several high-profile Huntsville residential and commercial developments.

Marathon Realty Corp., real estate subsidiary of K-VA-T Food Stores Inc., bought the land from The Beach Co., a real estate management, development and investment company, for an undisclosed amount.

The property is located in the Stovehouse District, between mixed-family development The Foundry, office building The Range and Stovehouse, the multi-use event complex.

The development is estimated to break ground in the second quarter of this year, with a projected early 2025 opening.

According to The Beach Co., the proposed grocery store will be connected to the adjoining developments by a 10-foot-wide pedestrian sidewalk along Governors Drive, as well as an internal cross access connection.

Last year, the Virginia-based grocery chain announced it would invest $90 million in opening six stores in the Huntsville area, creating about 1,350 jobs.

“We are looking forward to this addition as it will successfully complete our master development and vision for the Stovehouse District,” Bill Metzger, director of asset management at The Beach Company, said. “We are confident that the new grocery store will serve as a walkable amenity and valued hub for The Foundry’s residents and Range office tenants, as well as Stovehouse patrons and local Huntsvilleians.”

The full-service grocery location will be part of Food City’s initial phase-I rollout.
