Florida robber chased off by store owner with baseball bat left autistic son home alone

A 39-year-old Fort Walton Beach man attempted to rob a convenience store, only to be thwarted by a store owner armed with a baseball bat.

Then, after being taken into custody, Ryan Williamson told Okaloosa County deputies he had left his 3-year-old autistic son at home unattended, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident began with Williamson entering the Beal Parkway store about 2 a.m. Thursday, attempting to buy items with a credit card that was declined. Williamson told the owner he still wanted the items, despite no method of payment, and that he was “FBI,” according to the sheriff’s report.

Williamson left, but returned and went behind the counter, taking cigarettes from a display area, only to be refused service again.

About 30 minutes later, Williamson returned again, this time attempting to steal at $500 store display item. The owner told deputies that when he tried to stop the theft, Williamson punched him in the chest.

The owner responded by grabbing a baseball bat and chasing Wiliamson out of the store.

Deputies arriving at the scene stopped Williamson, but when they tried to put him in handcuffs, he refused their commands and tried to break free. A deputy shot Williamson with his taser, but it had no impact and Williamson snatched the taser from the deputy.

Ultimately, Williamson was subdued and taken into custody. He then informed deputies of his 3-year-old autistic son alone at their home. Deputies immediately responded to that address and found the child unsupervised, but unharmed.

Williamson is in the Okaloosa County Jail, being held without bond pending an initial hearing. He is charged with robbery, child neglect, resisting officers, obstruction of police and falsely impersonating an official in the commission of a felony.
