Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis: Tuberville should keep ‘fighting back’ against ‘misguided’ Pentagon abortion policy

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis today expressed support for Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s hold on military promotions.

Speaking on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” co-host Mika Brzezinski asked DeSantis is Tuberville should lift his ongoing hold on promotions in protest of the Pentagon’s abortion policy.

“We’re trying to force a change in Pentagon policy, to conform them to the law, while at the same time, he has allowed individuals to be appointed, so if there are mission critical promotions, bring them before the Senate. I think he’s been very clear about that that’s appropriate and I know they have done that in certain instances.”

Wednesday night, several of Tuberville’s Republican colleagues in the Senate attempted to advance the promotions individually, with Tuberville objecting.

Tuberville’s blockade began as a protest against Pentagon policy paying for service members to travel to states where abortion is legal for reproductive health care.

DeSantis said he felt the Pentagon’s policy is “misguided.”

“Actually, I think that what the (Defense Department) is doing…I don’t think they’re following the law,” DeSantis said. “With respect to the abortion tourism, I don’t think taxpayer money should be spent on that. We have a very weak defense industrial base, we’ve got huge problems with recruiting, and so their focus on that, I don’t think is consistent with the law.”

Approximately 376 promotions are currently caught up in the logjam, though the Senate did advance a few top posts. DeSantis said that was appropriate.

“I would also point out that you can promote people on an individual basis,” he said.

“I think the Senate has decided they don’t want to move a lot of those. But if there’s people that are mission critical, they can move it in spite of what Sen. Tuberville did. But I think fighting back on the Pentagon going outside the boundaries of the law, I think that’s Congress’ appropriate role for oversight, and checks and balances.”
