Florida deputy kills intruder who threatened to kill ex-girlfriend in Fort Walton, officials say

A Panama City, Fla., man who refused to leave his ex-girlfriend’s home after previously threatening to kill her was shot dead by an Okaloosa County deputy after firing multiple shots at the deputy and his partner, officials said.

Okaloosa County Sheriff Eric Aden said the officers were dispatched to a report of an armed domestic incident at a townhome in the Wright community near Fort Walton morning.

Deputies arrived at the scene and ordered the suspect — identified as 58-year-old Jose Antonio Medina — the leave the residence, but he refused, instead running into a bedroom and producing a gun.

Medina fired multiple shots at the two deputies, Aden said, before one deputy was able to return fire, striking Medina and killing him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neither deputy was injured in the incident, nor was the victim, who had called 911 after Medina refused to leave her home. She told deputies Medina had previously threatened to shoot and kill her.

“The deputy was forced to take action when Medina pulled a gun and fired at them,” Aden said. “We are incredible grateful both our deputies who responded to protect the homeowner were not harmed.

“This incident reinforces the inherent dangers law enforcement officers make on a daily basis,” Aden added, “and also how critical their training is in handling situations which can unexpectedly turn violent and life-threatening in mere seconds.”

As is standard protocol for officer-involved shootings, the two deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave, with pay, pending completion of an investigation.
