Florence man arrested in connection 2021 hit-and-run that killed woman

Florence police Friday say they have arrested a man who is the main suspect in a fatal hit-and-run crash that happened nearly two years ago.

Lori Avery, 56, from Florence, was walking near the intersection of Chisholm Road and East Rasch Road on Dec. 20, 2021, according to police.

Evidence at the scene indicated Avery had been struck by a vehicle that was believed to be a Nissan Altima.

Six days later, a patrol officer reportedly located the Nissan in the 100 block of South Kirkman Street in Florence.

The driver of the car was identified by police as Marlin Javier Lopez, 50, of Florence. Lopez was not a resident of the Kirkman Street address, police said, but had left the car parked behind the house prior to leaving the area.

Investigators were unable to locate Lopez and requested assistance from the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Task Force, as well as the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

Lopez was located and arrested on Wednesday on a warrant for leaving the scene of an accident with injury in the Atlanta area, according to police.

He is currently being held in the Lauderdale County Detention Center without bond.
